Don’t fall for the Spam Mongers

September 27th, 2008 by Stan Pontiere

There is now new software out that automatically posts to blogs-all blogs. Don’t waste your money. The only blogs that will allow this spam are those which are not moderated. I am currently receiving 10 to 15 of these automatic posts daily. I mark them as spam and they are blocked from ever posting to my site again. If you purchase this software all you are going to do is ruin your name and become a pariah among bloggers. Don’t ruin your reputation-avoid this BS software. I don’t mind the occasional poster who wants to plug his product and will usually allow these posts but I will not tolerate spam and as of today, I will notify the ISPs of anyone using this spam software. Most ISPs are very good about shutting down spammers so be warned. Spam is a disease that is destroying the internet marketing business and we all have a responsibility to put an end to it.

The Dreaded Writer’s Block

August 26th, 2008 by Stan Pontiere

If you are an internet marketer (specifically if you are using shoestring marketing techniques) then article writing is the life-line for your website. It builds credibility for your expertise, trust and also links to your website. If you are really serious about marketing, you should try to write at least one article a day to keep the traffic flowing. But, what happens when you sit down in front of your computer and the screen remains blank. Every so often, this is going to happen to every writer. It is called writer’s block and the question is what do you do about it. You know that if you don’t do something, it is no traffic and no links for your website.

That is what I faced when I got up this morning. I look forward to and actually love to write articles. But, when the words don’t come out, it is a pretty miserable feeling. Every writer has his own techniques for overcoming writer’s block. Here is what I do.

1. Walk away from it. Maybe, I will run down to the local Starbucks or maybe I will just take a walk around the block. Sometimes, all you have to do is give yourself a little break. By the way, that did not help this morning.

2. Free association writing. First, you get out an old-fashioned word processor-you know, like a pencil and paper. Then you start writing everything that comes into your mind. In doing this, sometimes the writer’s block cycle will be broken and you can get back to work. It works very well for some writers but, today it was just a waste of time.

3. Read something. It doesn’t have to be in your field of expertise. It could be anything from the morning paper, a magazine or Kafka’s “The Cockroach.” It doesn’t matter, just something that might give you a spark of an idea and break the block. For me today, it was Albert Camus and my mood became even worse.

4. Then, I read several articles on writer’s block and that broke the cycle. Of course, everyone who writes for a living is sometimes going to put up with the dreaded writer’s block disease and so that became my subject for today. My list of methods is by no means complete and when you run into this problem, there are plenty of sources to consult. You might even consider researching this problem and saving a few articles on your hard-drive. Then when the dreaded writer’s block strikes, you will be better prepared to deal with it.

Using social networking

August 11th, 2008 by Stan Pontiere

As promised, here is Bob the Teacher’s lessons on using social networking for building your online business.
I hope you find this helpful.

Here is written lesson #1

Five Ways You Can Build Your Reputation With Social Networking
By Bob Jenkins

Are you using social networks to build your reputation online? Whether you already are or you are just getting started with sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Ning, building your online reputation is your biggest responsibility.

Here are five ways to make sure you do it right.

#1: Be Proud Of Being You

The first thing is, you have to be yourself. You have to be who you are. Because although you can get away with being fake for a little while, as soon as one person realizes that you’re not who you say you are, your reputation is destroyed almost instantly because of the power of social networking.

So be yourself. And don’t be afraid of being yourself. Realize that you have some gifts and some knowledge that people need to know about, and those that want to learn from you are going to gravitate towards you. Those that don’t think you’re worth listening to are basically going to ignore you. And it’s at their peril, so don’t worry about them.

#2: Transparency - Never Hide From Your Audience

The second thing about your reputation is you should try to be transparent at all times. This means you keep everything real with your audience.

For example, over the last year, I used social media to show you my move from Maryland to North Carolina, including drama with the movers, picking the house, and getting it set up. I also pulled back the curtain to show what it takes to run a product launch.

When I did my last product launch, I was Twittering every day what I was doing to get ready for this site. Most of the gurus out there would keep everything under lock and key, and I was being very clear, saying, “This is what I’m doing to get ready for this launch.” It actually helped me have a better launch, even though I told everybody exactly what I was going to be doing.

They didn’t think that they had some surprise or whatever like most people teach; they just were excited to be part of it and part of the story. So be transparent. Let people know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, and they’re going to learn how to trust you.

#3: Be Positive For Positive Results

The third way to build your reputation is to be positive.

There are folks out there who generally can do a good job of being negative. I don’t know about you, but I don’t find that to be a very long-term profitable strategy.

It may get you some attention at first and spark some controversy, but that’s not the way to go. Be looking forward to the optimistic of your industry, of your business and what the results are going to be.

It would be easy for you to go onto Twitter or onto Facebook and talk about how you’re having a bad day or this product sucks or this week sucks or this relationship sucks. But you’re not really there for a support network, per se.

You’ll find some of that. If you have something bad happen in your life, sharing it with your followers will be very therapeutic for you and you will get a lot of support back. But when you’re just blasting negative things out, you’re going to get negative things in return, usually.

So try to be positive as much as possible and look for the opportunities that are out there and look at them from that positive perspective.

#4: Build Your Reputation And They Will Come

The fourth thing you must do is to be patient. This is because, initially, your reputation is going to be built only by yourself and the first initial people who get to know you. But as time goes on and you get more followers and you build a larger network of friends and peers, your reputation will solidify to allow your business to grow.

Once it hits a tipping point, your reputation and business accelerates at a very quick pace.

So be patient and let it happen. Don’t try this stuff out for a week and then come back to me next week and say, “Well, it didn’t really work. I didn’t really get any results yet.” You’ve got to let social networking play out over a few weeks and then a couple months and so on. A year from now your business is going to be tremendously different compared to where it is right now.

#5: Contribute To The Conversation – Every Day!

The fifth thing about your reputation is you need to be someone that people look to as a contributor, not as a leech, not as a mooch, as a contributor.

You have to be willing to be involved in the conversation, and you have to be willing to give as much or even more than what you’re going to get in return. The people who do that are growing so fast it makes my head spin.

I feel that I’m a pretty giving person but I see some other folks out there that just keep on giving, giving, giving and they just build up a huge following and that social capital is a real asset to your business. So you need to make sure that you’re contributing as much as possible to the conversation.

I don’t mean that as just go around randomly and try to help people. Within your specific task, your specific industry, the things you know well, you need to be at the forefront of letting people know how to do what you know how to do without charging them money at first.

They’ll come and find your site and your products and they’ll pay you for that as time goes on and their needs grow. With social networking you need to be building your reputation up first.

If somebody has a question, you should be one of the first people who answers and you need to answer without reservation not just, “Oh, I answered that in my eBook; go buy it”. They’re going to find your eBook if you just talk to them and give them solutions to the problem they are struggling with at that moment.

Give people your input, your encouragement for them to get better at what they are trying to do.

Any little quick free advice you can give, give it.

Actively Build Your Reputation With Social Networking And Reap The Rewards

You’ve got to be in this for the reason of having fun and really building that relationship. Dollars will come, there’s no doubt about that. But first, connect with people and really help them out. Understand that they’ll become loyal followers of what you do and see you for who you are.

Follow these 5 steps to building your reputation online and you’ll not only beat your competition, you’ll have more fun doing it!

Ask and Ye Shall Receive

August 6th, 2008 by Stan Pontiere

I spend a fair bit of time surfing the net, always looking for ways to improve my own website. One thing that I have discovered is that although many internet marketers give you plenty of great content, they make one simple mistake which kills their sales.

The problem is that they don’t ask for the sale and if you don’t ask, you will never make the sale. Just look at the websites and sales letters of the heavy hitters. On the heavy hitter sites, you will find some sort of sales button every couple of paragraphs. It may say click here for more information or click here for instant access but whatever it says, they are not afraid to ask for the sale.

On many newcomer sites that I visit, I find it very rare that they actually ask for the sale. They will tell you all about the product they are marketing and what it will do for you but, they fail to ask for the sale. If you don’t ask, they don’t buy.

Many years ago, I was a real estate broker and one of the first things that you learn is to ask for the sale or use something called assumed consent to close the deal. Asking for the sale is great. It is a simple answer-either yes or no. Assumed consent is slightly different and in some cases it can be more effective.

In the assumed consent approach, you assume that your customer wants and will buy your product so instead of just asking a yes or no question, you offer them alternatives as to how they want to buy your product.

For example, after you have completed your sales pitch, you simply ask the customer: Would you prefer to use credit card (click here) or would you prefer to use PayPal:click here. It makes it much easier to ask for the sale by giving these alternatives rather than risking a yes or no answer.

Either way that you go, it is important in a sales situation to give your prospect your closing statement (ask for the sale) as often as you can without going overboard.

As I said earlier, this is probably the most common mistake that newcomers make. They are fearful of asking for the sale and as a result it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy and they don’t make the sale. Before long, they become discouraged and drop out of internet marketing thinking that they will never make any money and they are right if they don’t have the nerve to ask for the sale.

You can make a fortune on the net but, you will never make a dime if you don’t actually ask the customer to take action and complete the sale. Remember, ask and ye shall receive.

Too Much Knowledge-A Bad Thing?

August 4th, 2008 by Stan Pontiere

I could not believe what I was reading. It came in an email, this morning, from one of the so-called gurus of internet marketing. He had the nerve to say:”Far too many people find themselves in a perpetual learning state.” The thing that shocked me was that in an effort to sell his product, he actually believed what he was saying.

You can never have too much knowledge and the moment you stop learning is the moment you start your decline into failure. Knowledge is one of the true keys to success. Of course, knowledge without action leads to the same result. Knowledge in and of itself has no value unless it is applied. So at least part of the formula for success is knowledge plus taking action on that knowledge will lead to success.

In internet marketing to be truly successful, you need as much knowledge as you can get about marketing, driving traffic, PPC, article marketing, keywords, niche marketing, researching niches, finding products that are in demand, creating your own product, creating your own affiliate program, JVs and much much more. In addition, learning must be an ongoing affair because the internet that we know today is already outdated when we wake up tomorrow morning.

Two years ago who ever heard of Squidoo, YouTube, virtual worlds, blogs and forums. Perhaps you had heard of them but, now they are an integral part of internet marketing. What changes are coming up in the future? We can make some guesses but, in reality, the internet is still in it’s infantcy and changing so fast that if we don’t keep learning, we will be left in the dust.

Yes, the basics still work but, new times demand new methods.

That being said, all study and no work makes Jack a poor boy. If you are going to make a living on the internet, it is the application of knowledge that brings about success and massive action leads to massive success.

Actually, the guru that I mentioned earlier, was not really talking about perpetual learning which we all need, he was talking about information overload which is a problem that all internet marketers must contend with. We must study and learn but, we cannot let ourselves become so overwhelmed information overload that we are frozen into inaction. This is probably the leading killer of newcomers to internet marketing. They are greeted with a myriad of routes to marketing success and don’t know which route to take. As a result, they become easily discouraged and give up before they have made any serious attempts.

My suggestion for newcomers is in the beginning, find one program that offers step by step plans and plenty of support and stick with that program until they start to find success. Some things that I would absolutely demand before I bought into a program is that on the programs website, they openly display contact information including not just an email address and a support phone number. If they don’t offer that, then what are you going to do when you need help.

In looking at programs, look out for hype and false promises. There is no such thing as instant success. It takes knowledge, time and work. You can make these vast sums that you hear about but not as a newcomer. Remember, the gurus have vast experience, easily enter into joint ventures with other gurus, have their own affiliate programs and products and a very fat wallet to back up everything that they do.

Learn the basics and become a perpetual learning machine but, at the same time become a perpetual action machine. Knowledge and action lead to success.
